Valvomo Architects is a design and architecture studio based in Helsinki, Finland. Valvomo was founded in 1993 by eight architects / designers working together as equal partners.

Some of Valvomo´s designs are being manufactured by Inno (Finland), Offecct (Sweden), David Design (Sweden), Softbox (Sweden), Lucepura (Italy) and Idée / Sputnik (Japan). The rest of the designs are looking for a manufacturer.

To coincide with the Milan international furniture fair in mid-April 2005 Valvomo was displaying selected furniture and lighting designs at Galleria Milano.

Part of the exhibition is showing in Helsinki starting September 1st for three weeks at design magazine Muoto´s 25 year anniversary exhibition at Korjaamo culture centre.

Design Rane Vaskivuori / Valvomo

Movie sofa system

Movie is designed for changing needs of everyday life. Movie units can be attached to each other freely. Any special corner parts are not needed. With identical units it is easy to change the function and the proportions of the sofa.
Backrest is attached to the seat with one axle only and it can be rotated freely. As the axis of the rotating backrest is placed asymmetrically, it is possible to create different sitting depths. By adding units, rotating the backrest and turning the seat, numerous variations are possible. One unit makes a flexible easy chair. Two units can form different versions of chaise longues and sofas. With three or more units the sofa combinations are countless.

BUOY LAMP

The Buoy lamp is a dimmable lamp that can be placed on the floor, on the table or taken to bed for reading. Swinging or pushing the lamp gently turns it on. The lamp will start dimming when it is held in a diagonal position. The dimming will stop when the desired level of light is chosen and the lamp is returned back to the vertical position. Tilting the lamp down turns the lamp off. The base of the lamp is soft and heavy, so the lamp will swing slowly back and forth for a while every time it has been pushed or switched on.
After a gentle touch of the lamp, it will always provide you the right amount of warm and soft light in various situations.
Buoy lamp consists of a rotation molded 3 mm thick opal polypropylene diffuser and a black polyurethane base with a control card in it. The light source is A60 W / E27

The Dress chair is a comfortable and light easy chair. Steel leg structure of the chair is supporting the cushion-like seat that seems to hover above the ground. Upholstered seat pad can be easily removed just by sliding it off the leg. Thus it can be turned over, cleaned or changed. The chair is stackable.
The Dress chair can be used for example at a dinner table, in a lounge or in a conference room, just to give few examples of its versatility. Removable cover allows you to change the look of the chair easily.

DROPPE-chair

This chair is designed to defy gravity, due to its unique leg structure. Legs of steel, shell of pressed plywood. Also possible to make the shell of injection-molded plastic. Stackable.

Softbox is an elegant and simple storage system. The boxes can easily be combined, stacked or moved to suit different needs. The soft surface of the box gives it a tactile quality. The material used in the Softboxes is heat formed needle punched polyester felt. The lids are made of vacuum formed PET plastic.

CCL, LIGHT

This minimalist light was designed to study and demonstrate beautiful glass material. The coating on the glass breaks the white light into separate colors. The name CCL stands for Complement Color Light. The light appears blue through the glass, but on the wall are reflected hues of orange and yellow. Colors are very vibrant and strong because the coating does not absorb any light. The mood of the light resembles earth atmosphere during sunset or sunrise.

CHIP-lounger

Design: Teppo Asikainen, Ilkka Terho / Valvomo

Chip is a lounger that you place on the foor and find it surprisingly comfortable. Slight change of balance makes it swing softly. Underneath there is a polyurethane "cushion" to smoothen the movement. Chip has been immensely popular in the media, it was included in the International Design Yearbook, amongs others.

When Globlow lamp is switched on it inflates slowly to become a gently glowing globe. Turned off it sinks quietly to sleep.

All steel parts with powder coated aluminum finish. Shade: white rip-stop nylon. Lamp: low energy, max 15 W.
All models include 12 W fans.

GLOBLOW BIG FLOOR LAMP

Dimensions: H 178, ø 80 cm

The Globlow-lamps takes shape as it fills with air. The lamp takes a different form every time it deflates.

GLOBLOW XL PENDANT LAMP

New large version of Globlow pendant lamp: Ceiling mount with powder coated finish.

Size of the pillow 140 x 140 cm.

GLOBLOW POLE

Dimensions: H 126, ø 40 cm

The luminous column expands to full height as the power is switched on. Globlow Pole can be suspended at any height from the ceiling.

GLOBLOW LED (prototype)

Dimensions: 75 x 35 cm

Globlow LED is a new kind of a lamp using LED light source and microprocessor technologies in imaginative ways. The lamp can be programmed to play different light sequences (color / brightness) and shade movements. The lamp can be activated by using various types of remote controls and sensors.

A series of candle holders for tea lights and regular candles. A semi-sphere has been carved out in two different ways for the two types of candles. The sharp "Jaws" bite into the candlestick. As the jaws are wedged, different sizes of candles fit. For tea lights there is "Shamrock", which has room for three tea lights, keeping them far enough from each other to avoid overheating. Ceramic white semipheres are 12cm of diameter, the carved out surfaces are of different color glazing.

A stackable small chair.
The inspiration for the shape of this chair comes from the microcosm of living organisms.

vx -stool (prototype)

vx is a wooden stool with simple geometry.
It can be used as a stool or as a small side table with a sofa.

Oka A, hanging coatrack:

Coatrack hangs from ceiling with a steel wire. It rotates and moves sideways, doesn't take floor space and makes cleaning much easier. Equipped with 6 hooks and a height adjusting mechanism.
Material: chromed steel and polyurethan.
Standard colours of hooks: dark grey, lime green and orange.
Length of wire 200 cm.

Oka B, standing coatrack: Equipped with 6 hooks.
Material: epoxy coated steel and polyurethan. S
tandard colours of frame: white, black and aluminium colour. coloures of hooks as in hanging version.

PLANAR EASY CHAIR & SOFA

This easy-chair and sofa design is based on the idea of "reducing" all unnecassary volumes of a rectangular volume to enable comfortable sitting. This leads to some interesting, unparallel "planes" that make the object interesting to look at from different angles. Upholstered, legs of steel rod. A sofa of the same idea has also been prototyped.

Saturnus table system is perfect for varying needs in home environment. By placing the two table modules on top of each other you get a conventional two level sofa table and just by lifting the other module onto the floor, one can easily double the usable table top surface or have two lower floor level sets. When there is a need for free floorspace, Saturnus can be hung to the wall like a painting. When disassembled the table is flatpacking and easy to store and move. Saturnus is a prototype and it´s made of 4 mm sheet aluminium and 35 mm diameter steel legs. All parts are painted and laquered.

The Swell panels are designed to be used as lightweight sound absorbers in the upper frequency range. They are well suited to eliminate disturbing reflections of environmental voice sounds, telephones and computer disk drives etc. They can also be used to improve privacy in an open work area such as a modern office space or a restaurant.

The Spaceball is a sphere made of laser-cut stainless steel. It reflects its surroundings and returns distorted mirror images and interesting light patterns.

Measurements 85 x 210 x 75 cm. Sulka is Finnish for “feather”.

This chair combines wooden beads, climbing cord and extruded aluminum profile in a comfortable, massaging seat structure. The seat is especially comfortable on warm summer days. This prototype is an office chair, but the bead seat can be used in other chair typologies too.

The smart tubular structure in the coat rack makes it lightweight and stackable. These properties make the coat rack ideal anywhere where flexibility is an advantage.
Lightweight makes it easy to move the coat rack. It stacks sideways effectively. Racks connect to each other by connector piece and form rigid lines. The wavy foot tube and tilted vertical tubes form visually interesting curtain shape.

It is easy to hang umbrellas and coats on arms of Y. Raindrops from wet umbrellas stay in a basis that is concavely shaped.

Y is made out of polyurethane foam and steel. Basis is cast aluminum.
